The vast
majority of the following photographs were taken during a ten day
expedition from Ushuaia (Argentina) across the Drake Passage to the
Antarctic Peninsular.
Zodiac Cruise, Paulet Island [Jan
2nd 2002]
An early rise
for a Zodiac cruise around Paulet Island where we saw lots of icebergs
littered with Adelie penguins.

covering them.

Esperanza [Jan 2nd 2002]
After lunch we
moved to Esperanza, an Argentinean base at Hope Bay. We were taken on a
tour of the station which is quite large, almost resembling a small
village with its many buildings. There was a museum, radio station,
bar/dining room and even a school for the children living at the base.

Mikkelsen Harbour & Cierva Cove [Jan 3rd 2002]
On this day we
landed at a small unnamed island in Mikkelsen Harbour with a tiny
refugio and lots of penguins. Later in the day we cruised around Cierva
Cove where we were treated to some quite spectacular icebergs.

Neko Harbour [Jan 4th 2002]
After
navigating through the ice in the Zodiacs we landed at Neko Harbour on
the coast of Andvord Bay. There was a fair bit of glacier calving
echoing round the bay as we climbed up to a viewpoint to look at the
scenery. Heavy snow began to fall and plenty of the passengers took part
in a snowball fight.

Paradise Harbour [Jan 4th 2002]
At Paradise
Harbour we managed to fit in a bit of tobogganing on our camping
mattresses after which we went on another Zodiac cruise in a glacier
crammed inlet. After dinner we returned to Paradise Harbour and camped
on the continent in the presence of Weddell seals.

The Lemaire Channel [Jan
5th 2002]
A spectacular
cruise breaching through the ice in the Lemaire Channel. After a
barbeque on the stern deck we embarked on another Zodiac cruise which
culminated in the highlight of the expedition - an encounter with a pod
of a dozen Orca whales pack-hunting Crabeater seals.

Antarctica [Feb 1999]
These photos
were taken during an expedition in February 1999. The Drake Passage
crossing was a real rollercoaster ride to say the least.
